RIP
I don't get fanatism.

2 images continue to flash in my mind since Mumbai was seiged by terrorists on wednesday night. The photo of the terrorist eyes gleaming with such an intensity and the photo taken by a Mumbai-based photographer known as Vinu of a human chain that was formed to keep people from entering the critical areas in the Colaba area in Mumbai.

The terrorist looked like any young man of his age the only difference was he was enjoying killing people. There was such an air of power and excitement in his eyes. Maybe in his eyes it was another round of computer games, another round of adrenalin rush. There was no fear, no hate just an excitement. Killing innocent lives certainly seemed to have excited him.

I will never understand hate or the ability to kill innocent people for whatever ideology whichever side prescribes to. All I know is no one deserved to die.

The worst sometimes bring the best in people. I don't think anyone was prepared for the attacks neither the police or the citizens but in their worse moment they stood together as one to keep others safe, to help others, to make a difference.

I hope with all my heart that if such a situation should ever occur here (I pray it never does) that we will set aside our differences and urban selfishness and act when it really matters.

God bless the souls that were lost in Mumbai and the ones that are lost everyday for ideologies we can never understand.

Worst moment....
Man is often reduced to shreds at his worst moment …….. when the computer hangs and he loses all his work. Grown men have been known to pray to the computer gods and break down in tears all because of a black box with keys to punch ;p

Filtered weekend
Misty towers

Now a little announcement before I continue – we can safely blame Mr Filter here for the erratic weather and unbelievable traffic jam in the last week. We were caught in a traffic jam everytime we got into the car, that too, on a weekend at non shopping areas!

Framed

The day started off with me getting lost for assuming I could trust Malaysian signboards (will I never learn?). Our first stop was Masjid India to get some stuff for his mom.

As most of you would have known, I’m always saying KL is a wonderful place to live because of the balance between its eastern and western qualities. Pick a spot in the city and you’ll find a mix of old and new and some aspect of a dominant east influence in that area.

on the steps to heaven
Masjid India or Little India as its infamously known, is the hub of everything Indian. The moment you walk out into the streets you’re greeted by Tamil music which is not common even in the streets of Chennai and you’re greeted by rows of saree shops and jewelers. While it’s pretty common for Malaysians, everyone else gets excited.

We walked around for a while and then headed to Bukit Bintang to check out Lowyat or as techies would call it – tech heaven. First we got sidetracked at Nando’s. I have never seen anyone so super excited by Nando’s chips and Starbucks. But I prefer Coffeebean!

Anyway the coffee addicts always win so it was Starbucks!

The outcome of the day - filter will always be known as the guy who bought shampoo at tech heaven! By then Praveen had arrived to join us after getting stuck in traffic. We jumped into my car and headed to Brickfields for the best ever thosai in town. I think I’ve taken every vege blogger who arrived in Malaysia to that shop – Sri Pandis.

You see I have an addiction to that shop, it’s the only place I have thosai, that too coz of its amazing chutney. I love chutney and even eat it with rice ;p

Now Brickfields was booming with double the usual activity thanks to Deepavali celebrations. There was a different song blasting from each corner. We were passing this cookies shop when a guy stops us insisting we try his murukku.

Me: vendampa
No, its ok
Him: chumma try panni pahrunge
No you just have to try
Me: nalla illehna yesuhvehn, okva?
If it isn’t nice I’ll scold you! Ok?
Him: prechaneh illeh ;p
No prob ;p
Him: ehpadi?
How is it?
Me : its ok only (and then I escaped) ;p

Actually the murukku was pretty good so anyone looking for tasty murukku, check out the temporary stall in front of Sri Pandi audio shop. Btw don’t tell them I recommended them, I have to maintain that it was ok only! ;p

The audio shop was playing excellent selection of songs setting the mood just right for clubbing later, only problem was the dj for the day had to break in between the songs and make announcements. At least wait till the music is overla!

Next up on the list was clubbing at my favourite Indian club but first of course we had to get stuck in another traffic jam! Apparently everyone in Malaysia was out in full force to welcome Filter ;p

Reel vidhurathuku oruh alehveh illehya?

As usual the music was good (though they didn’t play a number of my favs) and it wasn’t too crowded as most people were busy with festive preparations so for once we had enough space to dance. We just didn’t have enough people at our table as it was pretty last minute.

Dropped him off and then I rushed home to get ready for my cousins wedding. My mom was waiting for me all dressed saying I was late for the wedding. Somehow I managed to shower and tie a saree in 20 mins and we were off for the wedding. My mom was grumbling we were so late only to reach there to find the wedding ceremony had just started! Then it was my turn to grumble on being rushed out the house!

Now the wedding was actually my athai payans (ppl used to marry off their children to when they’re in this relation code). And I have a lot of them, so in the past few years, I’ve been happily ticking them off the list ;p and go “another one bites the dust” lol

The wedding had started super late and there was this one incident that had me laughing away. As the bride was leaving to change into her wedding saree (hindu weddings are long), the videographer stops here saying he needed to take some shots.

The bride immediately tells him “late ayiruchi valiyeh vidhungeh” “its already late, stop all this”. The guy was super stunned ;p Way to go women! ;p

I knocked off as soon as I got home and woke up 5 hours later.

I picked up Filter and headed for lunch at the best place to have South Indian food. I realized the last time I had watched someone eat the “Indian style” was when small boy was in town. Now for my non India readers, the “Indian style” is the cutest thing to watch. They would eat each curry/ curd with a different portion of rice with absolute patience. It’s just really cute to watch ;p

We then headed off to Midvalley to get a few books and shop. Of course Starbucks flashed by and we ended up watching the rain with coffee for company. We then left for BC as soon as Praveen joined us. I figured the weather would be lovely given it had just rained and there was no way I was gonna climb bc in the middle of the afternoon when the idea had first been mentioned.

We arrived at the blue hour, my most favourite time of the day where the skies are a brilliant blue and absolutely magical. BC was practically empty with a few people here and there. Filter discovered Murugas reflection on the water pools and we were walking around looking at the pools finding the best spots. And then we found those lights that became our inspiration for the day. Filter ended up turning into my model for the day while Praveen was his. Poor Praveen wasn’t expecting to be shooting anything.

Muruga Ray Golden reflection

The caves were nearly empty when we reached up and the breeze was amazing as usual. We got back down and headed to one of the shops for drinks. I remembered one of my friends had ordered a Neslo (coffee+choc) the last time we were there and it had been amazing. Lets just say it still is! Absolutely divine!

On our back to the city centre, it started raining again but we chanced upon KLCC looking absolutely stunning under mist, so we stopped to take more photos.

Hows that for a weekend! ;p

Busy wali ;p
Little King

The celebrations began with an appam session with the gang before the non KL bunch went back to their hometowns and where they’re still probably at. Ah it was finally our turn to bully one of the guys. He made the mistake of parking his new car near the appam stall and everytime he opened his mouth to tease us we’d tell him – you want us to throw that flower pat at your car is it?” Suffice to say he was a very well behaved boy for the day. He took us for a ride in the car and I was super amazed by the number of buttons on the dashboard. It was a bit too many for me.

The next day I had to get up super early to cook up a pot of vege briyani for the office potluck party and I so hate getting up early and cooking and then tying a saree! ;p thankfully it turned out well and I didn’t accidentally overdo the salt! After a week of late nights and battling none stop traffic jams I was knocked out on Friday night.

Saturday was a day of errands and meeting people. We decided to go shoot the Diwali atmosphere at the KL Sentral carnival. While the location was more convenient and less prone to traffic woes, the selections weren’t that great. Good thing we were there to photograph that atmosphere, and hands down Brickfields was more lively than the carnival itself. Though the traders were having fun posing for us.

I’d taken mom along with me and after she was heard telling her friends “people were posing all for them – they will even ask them to take photographs for them.” I guess she finally got her photography enlightmen on why the daughter is so crazy about it ;p

Purple elephant

We settled down for an absolutely wonderful dinner at Vidya’s. How did I get there in the jam? Well never use the main road ;p the thing about Vidya’s is if you order their dishes the food is amazing, don’t get the meals. We’re still wondering what they put into the food to make it so good.

Sunday was spent mostly cleaning up or running errands again. Mom and I were out buying stuff when we saw the florists selling gorgeous red roses. We tried to stop but we couldn’t find a parking lot so we left. Later that evening I was passing by the market and they were still selling the roses so I decided to buy them.

Me : How much are the roses uncle?
Uncle : Errr the roses are fake! ;p

Lol we were definitely conned thinking they were fresh roses.

We got home and having heard me complain non-stop we hadn’t done any biscuits this year, mom asked me to help her do nei urundai (ghee balls). Now I’ve never done this nor watch mom do it as she’s super at it. So imagine my surprise when the flour was burning hot. So I spent the next 10 minutes screaming ouch ouch and rolling the ghee balls. I’m so not doing them again! ;p

I finally managed to catch om shanti om which was being aired on tv – it was defiantly a good movie. Every year I end up watching one of these movies and end up putting the diwali kolam in the wee hours of the morning – its becoming quite a tradition! ;p

I stuck to something simple as I didn’t want to over exert myself. Did you guys notice how feeble Maxis line was on the eve. I was chatting with a friend and usually her phone dies somewhere in between our conversation coz of her battery but this time we got cut of every 20 minutes or so. At one point we were suspicious that someone might be listening to us and decided to welcome whoever it was into the conversation –

“Whoever who might be listening, err if you’re so bored have fun listening to us talk nonsense.”

And so I finally slept at 4 ish only to be waken up by mom at 6 am. I said no way I’m going back to sleep but thanks to the non stop noise I woke up with a headache having barely slept!
Dressed up and headed to the temple. We got home just in the nick of time as our morning guests arrived. As usual I was bullying the little boy who bullies me ;p kid only speaks to me if he’s super bored, at all other times he intentionally ignores me. By the time they left and we had breakfast, it was time for us to head off for lunch at a family friends place. It’s a yearly affair to have lunch at their home, plus its quite fun plus I don’t dare miss it without a valid reason ;p

One eyed Twinkle toe*s Cheeky twins

I met up with some friends in PJ and since I was already in the neighbourhood, prav and me decided to spend some time with the children from Agathians. We brought along chocolates for the children. They were happy to see us and going akka akka, we even had an invisible akka who turned out to be hiding under the table ;p

But the moment I saw them watching tv I knew that they were gonna be distracted for the rest of the evening. So we were sitting and talking to the little ones who weren’t watching tv and just lazing around. Few hours later we left for dinner, when I got home watched Santosh Subramaniam – a watchable movie.

Another super busy weekend.

Without music???
What is life without music….. well we’ll add dance in as well!

I would even say its worthless. When I was still involved in my music school, we used to break into song every other moment in the classes, when we walked into other classes, at the dance floor, under the stairs, at the canteen, on the road, well practically everywhere.

I used to also have access to a personal singer who would sing whatever song I requested, I think I’ve requested Janani ninnu vina the most among my other favs. Of course you had to return the favour but hearing someone sing live is an absolute bliss. Since I left the school this was one of the things I missed the most.

So the best thing about my super busy weekend was I found a new personal radio @ the filtered Sambhar. I say radio coz this one can sing everything under the musical radar brilliantly ;p

We switched of the radios and traveled between Carnatic, Rahman and the 80s. Of course after that he got pestered to sing throughout the next day. The weather was also perfect for singing and we ended up watching the rain from Starbucks and singing.

Unfortunately I now have to reprogram myself to stop singing and humming in public since my colleagues have begun to give me a weird look. Doesn’t help either that personal radio isn’t local ;p.

So this is a call for another personal radio – please send your audio files for application! ;p

Good music and good company always the best combination.

Ps : thats the only compliment you're getting ;p

Famous??
Apparently fame can go to people’s heads.

I was out dancing with friends when we heard that a bunch of actors would be turning up at the club. The buzz word was the Saroja team would be in the house. I remember when their first hit movie was a blaze in theatres, the team brought the house down in a local Chennai club making an effort to speak and mingle with their fans.

So naturally a lot of people got excited and the club decided to play their hit songs. As the team walked in the DJ announced their arrival. They walked into a corner without acknowledging the crowd and remain there till the club closed. Even when the lights were switched on they were still at their corner.

Given that this was one of the most famous clubs in town, it wasn’t the first time a celebrity has been present.

I remember the time Singer/ actor Yugendran was in the club around the time where one of his movies had been doing very well. He stopped at a few tables and spoke to a few people and when the DJ invited him to the stage, he gladly obliged and even sang us a song which by the way was really good.

I truly believe that the more talented a person is the more humble they are, for example all the musicians I have met, every single one had been the epitome of humbleness. These people are experts in their fields and yet they act as if they are no one important.

I’m sure you guys remember my brush with Surya and then another friend finally met up with him while on duty and he for all his fame was pretty humble.

I loved the movie Saroja more than I did Chennai, but the core reasons these movies worked is they didn’t project any one of them as a hero but rather focused on characters and friendship which is why the movies work. This to me is the only winning formula for the Saroja team given their first 2 movies which were more hero centric failed miserably.

I hope they remember that their popularity is really per movie and not per actor. They unfortunately don’t have the looks for that and let’s face it that’s what the industry is all about.

They could have popped on stage for a minute, said hi to their Malaysian fans, and left. No one expected them to do more than that. Malaysians don’t really hog artists, we understand the concept of giving space. While I wasn’t bothered whether I saw them or not, a lot of people were hoping to and they were disappointed.

So I suggest they get of their high horses and remember that you’re as good as your last film. Fame can go at a click of a button.

Canothon
.... well Canon will be hosting a 12 hour Photo Maraton at Berjaya Times Square on 1 November 2008. Apparently the marathon will be styled in the fashion of a treasure hunt to test participants creativity and photography skills.
Good news to compact camera users, the competition will be open to both compact and dslr users. I wonder if we can take part under both categories?

While the competition is free for all Canon users, non canon photographers can take part by paying a RM 15.00 fee.

I think the format is definetly welcoming to the growing number of photographers in Malaysia and is quite vendor friendly.

So anyone wishing to win one of the yummy prizes head on to their site to register online.

Life ...
The celebration of arts ... Every year around this time life gets me thinking. Well I used to not have time to think as I’d be surrounded by a buzz of activities decorating, performing at least 5 items, directing and coordinating a few and tons of practice. I practically lived at my music school. But it also meant I got tangled in a lot of unwanted problems.

These years I limit performances to a maximum of 3 for Navarathri, and spend the rest of the days watching others perform or attending prayers. I didn’t even perform anywhere this year and declined offers coz I knew I’d be busy with a new job. Truthfully while I sometimes miss the buzz, I’m glad I’m out of that web of politics I kept getting myself dragged in. There’s a lot I wish I was still a part of but when I weigh it with what I’ve gone through, I pat myself for walking away.

Life is not worth all the heartaches that comes with being somebody. I’ve said it before you’re scott free to do anything as long as you’re not outstanding. Stay under the radar and the world will ignore and leave you alone.

That unfortunately has been something I’ve never been able to do. Hey don’t blame me for wanting to be one of the best in anything I’m involved in.

Lets not even go too far. Photography was a hobby I started taking seriously because of my love for it yet was unable to pursue sooner because of the cost. Today I have photographers who personally know me, steal my ideas and practically hog my flickr page and never leave a comment. Yet are able to quote every single image when they see me.

So has life always been one sour experience after the other? Well yes and no.

I have photographers from all over the world, amazing photographers who I look up to who make it a point to acknowledge your work. They don’t need to but they do.

That’s where I learn the second most important lesson in life. Greatness comes with humility. You will only face problems with people who have nothing to show. But the truly great are ever willing to help, teach and encourage your endeavours.

The musicians and dancers I have met, the people who have always encouraged me. Everytime we meet the first thing they ask is are you still performing. Or the musicians who see me at a performance who insist they should see me performing at the next function. Their love has kept me sane.

These have been the reason why I refuse to give up on my passions. I’ll stay clear off the nutcases and their associations. But as long as I can I will continue to learn and perform gifts god has bestowed on me.

Tyre Tyrant
I think at some point in my previous life I must have been a tyre tyrant. That probably explains why in my 11 years of driving 4 different cars, I’ve had to change tyres 6 times!

Tyre number 6 punctured itself on the eve of Raya. What a way to start a holiday eh?

We had gone out for dinner with friends and as I was driving back to drop one of my friends back I heard a funny noise coming from the car and decided to investigate. Turns out the tyre had gone flat. So I laughed and mentally calculated which number it was while my friend called up another friend who had just left to come and give us a hand.

Now I know how to change a tyre, I’ve got the experience. My only problem is I never have enough strength to do it. You’ll understand what I mean if you’ve ever cranked up a jack and unbolted the nuts!

So when my friend turned up he goes, actually I’ve never changed a tyre before. Talk about luck!

Anyways we take turns jacking the car and finally it came time to unbolt the nuts. Now I’m not tiny neither are my friends. There we were standing and jumping on the nutbolter and it just refused to budge. We somehow manage to open 3 of the nuts but one nut stubbornly remained intact, it took us nearly 30 mins to get it off and we were nearly giving up.

Then we couldn’t get the tire out. It was just stuck! Now I’ve complained before that my car has its own mind and it’s a bit over technical for me. I still don’t know how I managed to get it out all I know, we were laughing our heads off while wondering wtf!

By the time we were done, we were super tired and badly in need of drinks. Who says you need to join a gym, just change a few tyres! Lol

Ps : oh yeah I have an emergency service just couldn’t find the number! ;p

Stop it!
I'm just sick of hearing/ reading/ listening to people secularise indians! why don't indians do this, that, go here, there, bla bla bla?

Can people quit asking silly, irrelavant questions??

Well I'm angry coz of this post and here's my response to it!

this link got sent to me coz of how ridiculous this discussion is

first photography is a hobby for most and for many a profession

whichever way it is neither a easy hobby nor a cheap one though it has become cheaper thanks to digital cameras

to excel in it you actually need to invest time and patience in learning it

a persons interest is a personal thing - it shouldnt be because the whole world is doing it, or because theres a need to increase the number of people interested in it from one race - and why does photography need to be secularised into why theres less from one race?

why is there a need to secularise everything with indians?

so whats next why arent indians into xtreme sports, adventures, sky diving, bungee jumping,

there are a lot of malaysian indians involved in photography - most just dont publicise it neither do they claim at being great in it - plus there a thousand of indians involved in the industry

at the same time there are a lot of con artist who claim themselves to be photographers and charge people for crap photographs

if they had an ounce of honesty in themselves they wouldn't be charging people for the autrocious photos they snap

id rather people get into photography because theyre interested in it and not for all the wrong reasons

no one needs to invest in dslrs if all they want is to take photos of their family n friends

stop secularising indians

One of the TAPs’

Nope I’m not a faucet but mua got picked to be part of the AMBP Travel Ambassador Programme (TAP). TAP comes as part of the launch of the new All Malaysian Travel Tool by The Star in collaboration with Mayflower Travel group.

The Star aims to kill a few birds through this programme:

  • Create new ways to reach out to readers
  • Increase domestic tourism (yay my country is beautiful – I think I’ve told you that a million times)
  • Bloggers are media PARTNERS and not rivals (ah they’re waking up)

Travel ambassadors have been promised opportunities to travel on ALL EXPENSE PAID TRIPS to the regions they previously selected during submission. While yesterdays newspaper report, the All Malaysian website and their emails to us have repeatedly mentioned this, the event itself was brief and vague about the details of the programme.

From a PR perspective, the event was ambitious, hazy yet so much potential could have been derived from the launch. None of the participating blogs or bloggers were mentioned during the event. Still let’s give them the benefit of doubt and here’s what will make the project successful:

While I understand the economics of peak time travel the programme won’t work if TAPs:

  • Isn't provided with all expense paid trips (to include travel/ food)
  • Travel is limited to weekdays only - The Star keeps forgetting that most bloggers have day jobs and while we write and report on various topics we’re still not paid media to attend events or travel on weekdays. For example the recent Sunway trip that was offered to us, most of us (including me) had to decline as we were rushing deadlines.
  • It's a 1 night trip – unless they think a place is super boring you will need at least 2 nights and 3 days to discover a town or city as people like me like to discover none tourist attractions which I believe is the true charm of a place. My suggestion, give us a weekend and add on one working day to discover a place.
  • Where they expect you to turn up instantaneously – give us at least 3 weeks time to make arrangements for these trips. Calling us 2 days before is pretty ridiculous unless it's a day trip.

There is so much to learn and discover in Malaysia which is why I try to travel locally at least once a year. So if The Star is seriously looking to boast domestic travel I hope they will take heed my suggestions before they embark on this project.

Random crazy behavior alert!

And now for the juicy information, apparently I’m a popular blogger! Gasp seriously I didn’t know this, well at least I really didn’t know I was popular in Malaysia coz lets face it most popular local bloggers are either camwhore bloggers or political bloggers and I’m neither. So when I got interviewed by The Star reporter and was told this I was quite flabbergasted. Woohooo *does the victory blogger dance (though there’s no such thing)

Anyways I hope I didn't blabber some gibberish nonsense and oooh nope you won’t be seeing my photo as I’m keeping with my resolution to not associate the blog with my photo. Seriously super embarrassing momentla, and my friend Kervin who also got picked as a TAP wouldn't stop teasing me! BAH!

Random crazy behavior ends!

Perks from attending the event, we were given a host of freebies which included 2 stays in Sandakan and Bukit Merah Resort, a few discount vouchers for Mayflower travels, a cute bag, a polo T and tons of local travel maps (essential for local travelers who love to get lost!). Congrats on the launch and let's hope everyone benefits from this venture.

Half shirt ??? ewww
I was watching this video on a presentation and was totally distracted by this guy who was wearing one of those half shirts – where both halfs of a shirt comes from different materials. Plus he was bald and reminded me of my friend, as she has a fixation for bald men. I was further distracted by his constant rubbing of his bald head throughout the 45 minutes presentation, I mean I’d understand fixation with hair but your bald scalp?

Anyways what possessed first the designer and then people to actually wear these half shirts? And didn’t the fashion vanish sometime back? And why are people still wearing it? So any closet half shirt wearers here?

Come on fess up! ;p
